So… The new order of business is to say things like:
“Oh My G****”
Why do we say this? Is this the reason we think of ourselves as worth something….
We believe that:
- “Just because that guy said it, I am okay….”
- “Have you heard what he said?”
Have you heard what GOD has to say?
You shall not misuse the Name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His Name. (Ex. 20:7 ASV)
You shall not use or repeat the Name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, lightly or frivolously, in false affirmations or profanely]; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His Name in vain. (Ex. 20:7 AMP)
No using the Name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his Name. (Ex. 20:7 MSG)
Wait are we using His, THE ALMIGHTY GOD’s, Name in vain…. No way…. It is just a figure of speech right?
How about:
- “I swear to G****“
- “I swear by the name of G***“
Here is what God said:
Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: but I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your speech be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and whatsoever is more than these is of the evil one. (Matthew 5:33-37 KJV)
According to what I understand and see daily… Both of these are used so often, yet they have no ground… They are used in a worthless manner…
Defining “vain”
Now according to origins of the word “vain” means:
“in an empty or thoughtless manner”
I normally do not go directly to Hebrew Roots… but here I needed to understand it myself…. (From E-Sword)…
“שׁו שׁואo
shâv’ shav
shawv, shav
From the same as H7722 in the sense of desolating; evil (as destructive), literally (ruin) or morally (especially guile); figuratively idolatry (as false, subjectively), uselessness (as deceptive, objectively; also adverbially in vain): – false (-ly), lie, lying, vain, vanity.”
Wait… Does this mean we all at some point has used God’s Name in vain? Possible.. I know I have….
The next bit is also needed…
What about false teaching, false prophecy, etc?
If you teach a lie about God, it is using His Name in vain…. Just look above at the Hebrew… False and lying does appear to be a part of that…
False prophecy is also lying to a person… Yes, you can give hope in the process, BUT IF THE HELP IS NOT FOUNDED IN CHRIST, IS IT TRUE?
For instance once I hear a lot is: “You will be a millionaire in a year…” to every second person? Doubt it…
But what does God say about this…
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1 ESV)
We are not suppose to just accept these…
Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. (James 3:1 NIV)
Why teach about God if you teach falsely? Especially if this is the warning…. And then The 3rd Commandment (Ex 20:7).
So should we go on with our nonsense? Or should we repent for being so ignorant to misuse the Name of the God above all…
God is Love… Is false love then also a part of using His Name in vain…

Please this is a call on everyone:
LET US LIVE IN A MANNER THAT GLORIFIES GOD… LET US STOP USING HIS NAME IN VAIN… LET US LIVE IN REAL LOVE… PLEASE TREAT PEOPLE HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED… IF YOU LOVE GOD, THEN LIVE FULLY FOR CHRIST…
God bless.
